Rest Is Suspicious
Never stopping wasn't a strategy. It was a coping mechanism.
There's a particular mythology around founders that I bought into for longer than I'd like to admit.
The mythology goes like this: real founders don't stop. They wake up early. They stay up late. They are always building, always iterating, always on. And if you are not those things, if you take an afternoon off or decline a meeting or sit on a park bench for twenty minutes without checking your phone, well maybe you're just not cut out for it. Maybe you're lifestyle business material. Which is the founder equivalent of being told you have a nice personality.
I ran that playbook for years. It worked. Or seemed to. I was productive. I was responsive. I was visibly committed at all hours. But the thing about visible commitment is that it gets rewarded constantly by people who also believe rest is suspicious.
What I didn't understand at the time: "never stopping" wasn't a strategy. It was a coping mechanism. Because if I was always moving, I never had to sit still long enough to notice that some of what I was building wasn't working. That some of the decisions I was making at 11 PM were objectively worse than the ones I would have made at 10 AM. That speed had become the disguise I wore over uncertainty.
I know a lot of founders. The ones who burn out rarely do so from working too hard. They burn out because they couldn't distinguish between being needed and being useful. Between motion and contribution. Between the identity of "founder who never stops" and an actual human being with a finite nervous system and a family that learned to schedule around the absence.
We celebrate the grind because it's legible. It's visible. You can photograph someone at a desk at midnight and it reads as dedication. You cannot photograph someone deciding not to take a meeting because they already know the answer and their kid has a thing after school. That reads as nothing. But it might be the better life decision.
I'm not making an argument for laziness or softness or whatever people call boundaries. I'm just saying that "never stopping" is often what happens when a person hasn't figured out what they're running from and are not totally sure what they're running towards. The building becomes the buffer. The calendar becomes the armor. And the identity of the founder who never stops becomes the story you tell yourself so you don't have to tell yourself the scarier one, which is that you might not know who you are without the company pinging you every nine minutes.
I don't have a clean ending for this. I just know the mythology cost me more than it gave me.
